The Institute is the main center of research about the flora, the fauna and the actual and past ecosystems of Colombia, as well as about the use and conservation of the biological resources.

The Institute possesses the most important biological collections of Colombia and ones of the most recognized collections in Latin America. These collections include the Herbario Nacional Colombiano (COL) and large zoological and archeological collections.

The Natural Sciences Institute is:

• Scientific Authority CITES (Convention over the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Wild Fauna) for Colombia.
• Focal Point for Colombia of the Global Taxonomical Initiative (GTI).
• Focal Point for Colombia of Andinonet, the network of Andean country members of Bionet-International (The Global Network for Taxonomy).
